What is Undergraduate Research Symposium?

Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) is usually frequently conducted in North Americans universities. It is a research and learning activities that enriches a student’s undergraduate experience. Students report that participation in research, scholarship, or creative activity broadens and deepens their classroom learning and supports the development of a range of skills. The determination of this event is to share the knowledge, ideas, and insights of a particular topic or theme.

Objective of the Symposium:

North American universities very regularly promote research within the undergraduate students. Being motivated by this unique practice of the other part of the world, the School of Business & Economics (SoBE) of UIU is going to organize the Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) in association with the Institute of Business and Economic Research (IBER), and the Institute of Advanced Research (IAR) in August 2024. Though the concept is quite new for our context, URS is expected to create an opportunity for discovering new ideas and knowledge through engaging undergraduate students in different areas of research in business education. The prime motivation of this kind of research symposium is to encourage and to involve the undergraduate students to carry out research activities in their field of interest, especially in the business education. This is a signature program of the School of Business & Economics (SoBE) of UIU, and it will be held in every year.

Eligibility of the participants:

Anyone currently studying undergraduate in both public and private universities in Bangladesh especially in business education can participate in this research competition. A single author can prepare the article or he/she can take co-author to complete this work with full guidance of the faculty member of his/her university. It is to be noted that two authors from different universities can prepare paper and submit in this competition. However, in this case only one supervisor name will be included in the paper.

Program Description:

URS aims to encourage research initiatives of the young minds so that they too can contribute towards making a difference in the academic arena. Additionally, it intends to promote UIU among researchers, academicians, business leaders and policymakers.

Please read the details of the program of URS 2024:

  1. This symposium is open to all currently studying undergraduate level or equivalent at the public and private universities in the country, and students will be able to submit their research work/paper for this research competition.
  2. There are three major domains for URS 2024 which are domain 1 includes: Economics, Accounting & AIS, and Finance & Banking; domain 2 includes: Management & MIS; Human Resource Management; domain 3 includes: Marketing, and Supply Chain Management.
  3. Students can submit their research work under any of the domains. Same students can send us the multiple papers from different domains.
  4. This would be online submission, and all participants must submit their research papers in the prescribed format within the deadline. Papers after the deadline will not be entertained for the competition.
  5. After receiving the research papers, our dedicated IT team of URS 2024 will do the plagiarism test and those papers will be sent for the first review if the plagiarism test is below 15%.
  6. All the research papers will go through a blind review process by a team of senior reputed faculty members of the different universities, and will be assessed on the basis of originality and uniqueness of the thought.
  7. After receiving the reviewer’s feedback, URS 2024 authority will send them to the selected participants for improving their research work by addressing the comments given by the reviewers.
  8. Only shortlisted participants from each domain will get the invitation to come to UIU for presenting their research papers in front of the esteemed panel.
  9. At the end of the presentation, both the scores such as the score given by the reviewers for each paper and the score given by the panel during the presentation, will be added. Based on the scores, top three from each domain will receive the financial awards as declared.
  10. Rest of the presenters from each domain will receive a certificate of participation with a token gift from UIU.

Guidelines for authors for their article/research paper:

  1. The research paper must be original work. Internship thesis paper/project paper on a unique scope modified in the structure of a research paper will also be accepted.
  2. Excessive plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Each and every research paper will be checked with Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, to assess plagiarism level. Papers will be accepted only if the overall Plagiarism percentage is less than 15% with no higher than 3% from any individual source.
  3. For referencing, APA 7th edition should be strictly followed.
  4. The maximum length of the paper will be 15 pages excluding reference & appendixes.
  5. The paper will be written in English language.
  6. The font of the paper will be Times New Roman with a font size 12 and the line space is 1.25.
